Carcinogen Alphabet: “S” for Silica

Along with other health affects such as Silicosis or Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), crystalline silica in the form of either quarts or cristobalite dust can cause lung cancer, these are recognised as Group 1 carcinogens to humans. Silica dust has been suggested to be the cause of 800 lung cancer fatalities per year in the UK.

In support of the “No Time to Lose” Campaign the SEL Group will be running an ABC’s of carcinogens campaign and each week we shall release details regarding a different well known carcinogen.
